Key Facts:
Although clinical practice guidelines
for osteoporosis exist, they are not followed consistently (Ontario Women’ Health Council, 2003).
Family physicians and other health care
workers have limited access to the training and tools needed to effectively manage those with
osteoporosis.
Health care workers have limited access to the
training needed to improve a person’s adherence to treatment and involvement in their osteoporosis care
plan.
Effective management of osteoporosis requires an integrated system of care. Information must flow freely
between various health care providers. Clinicians must be aware of the risk factors for osteoporosis, know
when to refer patients for diagnosis and what medications to prescribe.
The Strategy’s programs and services are evidence-based and build on best practices from research, community
