Power4Bones

Power4Bones is a free seven lesson bone-health education program for Ontario grade five students. The goal of  the program is to improve students’ awareness and knowledge of bone health and bone-healthy behaviours in addition to positively influencing their intentions to incorporate bone-building foods and physical activity into their lives. The program consists of two main learning strategies – interactive Web challenges and a Public Service Announcement activity as well as many other innovative and fun components including physical activity motivating prizes and weekly comic episodes.

Long-term outcomes:

  • Power4Bones is currently in its fifth year of programming and continues to increase its reach every year. In the 2008-2009 school year 2000 classes or ~54,000 students participated. Results from evaluations of the program reveal that Power4Bones has contributed to increased knowledge of the factors responsible for bone health – nutrition and physical activity, and intentions toward these bone healthy behaviours. Students indicated they had fun doing the program and all key messages were communicated and retained. They felt empowered to take care of their bones. Teachers also were very positive about the program and felt it was a successful addition to their classroom.
